Finding an internship is quite challenging and the dread one feels from awaiting responses, not to mention facing the endless rejections, is a feeling that renders one completely helpless. I had the wonderful opportunity to gain hands-on laboratory experience by securing an internship through the Discover Gap Year Program. The internship aided me in deepening my understanding of both techniques used as well as the practical applications of chemistry in industry at Trace Element Analysis Metallurgical Laboratory. Working at TEA-Met Lab provided a platform for me to allow the completion of my Work Intergrated Learning program, which without I would not come to call myself a graduate. This experience solidified my passion for analytical chemistry and provided a strong foundation for pursuing further studies and career opportunities in the field. I have immense gratitude for the opportunity provided to me and the knowledge and skills I gained at TEA-Met Lab will undoubtedly be invaluable as I move forward in my journey as a chemist.
The discover gap year program really was a transformative experience. For the very first time stepping into a professional environment, it really opened doors to so many possibilities. Through working practical assignments alongside the senior chemists and my mentor and encountering exposure to real world problems. The internship program really set a difference between what theory and practice is. Through the discover gap year, it taught me the importance of time management as it was crucial to report accurate results on time within the company. The internship opportunity also helped me discover my strengths, overcome my weaknesses and instil confidence in my work that I produced. For me it was not only about the technical skills that I gained but also about the personal growth, adaptability to new working environments and realizing how unique perspectives and effective communication can really build a team. Through the gap year program I learned alot of things that will forever help me in my professional life , I learned alot of skills that not only helped me grow professionally but also as personal and for than i will eternally be greatfull for this opportunity and i would gladly advices anyone who gets this opportunity to take it with both hands
One thing I love doing is singing, I've always wanted to be part of the worship team and to be able to compose music. With the help of the discover program I have accomplished that. With the internships we have done as part of the program, I have learned what it is like to work with adults as well children. Speaking in front of a crowd is personally something I struggle with but throughout this journey I have learned to just go for it even when you feel like your nerves are getting the best of you. Other than that I have started reading my bible more often and through that learned more about God's nature and how special each and every person is to Him.
With the help of the Discover The program I was able to discover what I really wanted to study in university, without that discovery I would be studying something I am not passionate with. I have been a shy person my whole life but here I was basically forced to come out of that shell and it was the best the thing that happened to me. Personally, the benefits outweigh the challenges by far. The only challenges I faced were my own personal challenges or insecurities, for lack of a better word. It was a blessed journey and I would recommend everyone to try it out.
